Through a grant from the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC), Gateway85 CID launched the Freight Sustainability Cluster Study in December 2025 to identify policies, programs and projects that will advance more sustainable freight movement in the district. Recognized as one of the Atlanta region’s highest-priority freight clusters, Gateway85 is well positioned to become a leader in freight sustainability which will strengthen our district’s businesses, employees and surrounding communities.
Over the course of the 16-month study, the project team will assess current practices and programs for zero emissions vehicles, workplace electric vehicle charging and transportation demand management programs within the CID and identify best practices from across the country that could be implemented in the district. A Stakeholder Advisory Committee (SAC) of local industry leaders will guide the study, while additional freight stakeholders will be engaged through focus groups and interviews.
Potential recommendations will include strategies for transitioning fleets to zero-emission vehicles, expanding workplace electric-vehicle charging, and encouraging alternatives to single-occupant vehicle commuting. The consulting team working with the CID and ARC includes Gresham Smith (lead), Spatial Plans, E.MISSION Advisory and GHD. The study is scheduled for completion in April 2027.
Map
The study area includes the entire CID, which is roughly bounded by Peachtree Industrial Boulevard, Beaver Ruin Road, the Gwinnett County line, and Britt and Williams Roads on the south side.

Why This Study Matters
- Gateway85 sits at a critical crossroads for regional freight movement in Gwinnett County and the Atlanta region, carrying significant truck traffic that supports jobs and economic activity.
- As shippers, carriers, and employers increasingly prioritize cleaner and more efficient logistics operations, freight sustainability can strengthen Gateway85’s competitiveness as a logistics hub.
- The study will identify improvements to enhance freight mobility, tools to help freight-oriented businesses adopt more sustainable practices, and strategies to improve workforce access through alternative transportation options.
