Tucked along Financial Drive in Norcross, in the heart of the Gateway85 Community Improvement District, Special Olympics Georgia is changing lives every day. From its headquarters in our district since late 2017, this nonprofit serves thousands of athletes with intellectual disabilities across the state, providing year-round sports training, competitions and health initiatives that promote inclusion, confidence and community.
A Legacy of Inclusion and Impact
The global Special Olympics movement began in 1968, when Eunice Kennedy Shriver founded Special Olympics Inc. to create sports opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Two years later, in 1970, Special Olympics Georgia was formed, bringing that same vision to life in the Peach State. What started as a small group of dedicated athletes and coaches has grown into a statewide network supporting more than 26,000 athletes each year.
From swimming and basketball to gymnastics and tennis, Special Olympics Georgia offers training and competition in 26 Olympic-type sports, giving athletes of all abilities the chance to compete, develop new skills and form lifelong friendships.
How You or Your Business Can Get Involved
Special Olympics Georgia thrives because of the generous contributions of time, talent and resources from people and organizations across the state. There are many ways to support its mission:
- Volunteer: From coaching to event support, there’s a role for everyone — no sports experience required.
- Donate:Â Contributions help fund year-round training, competitions and health programs for athletes.
- Sponsor:Â Businesses can make a lasting impact through event sponsorships or corporate partnerships.
- Attend an event:Â Show your support in person and cheer on athletes as they compete and achieve their goals.
Whether you give your time, make a donation or simply spread the word, your involvement helps empower athletes to discover new strengths and abilities.
