To improve pedestrian safety along a heavily traveled corridor, Gateway85 CID constructed a midblock crossing on Beaver Ruin Road in 2019. There was a great need for the project because signalized intersections were spaced nearly one mile apart — forcing many pedestrians to cross without safe infrastructure and at great risk.
The new crossing features a pedestrian refuge median, offering a secure midpoint for those unable to cross the full width at once. It also includes an audible High-Intensity Activated crosswalk (HAWK) beacon, which alerts drivers to pedestrians in the roadway and enhances visibility and safety for all users. Funded through a Georgia Department of Transportation grant, this project also received additional support from Gwinnett County DOT and Gateway85 CID. The CID managed all project phases — from planning through construction.
